Throughout history in myths and legends garnet has been entwined with pomegranates. It’s name even having been derived from the latin “granatum“ meaning many seeds. Whilst picking flowers, the greek goddess Persephone was abducted by Hades and held captive in the underworld as his bride. On the direction of Zeus, Hades was forced to release Persephone on the condition however that she could only return to the surface should she abstain from all food from the realms of the underworld. Hades wishing to bind her to him and knowing she could not resist the pomegranate’s fruit, presented her with it’s delicious seeds. So for a third of the year Persephone made her passage back to the underworld, to Hades and the pomegranates, whist the world fell into winter in her absence.

Garnets have a rich and varied symbology though through this story’s association came to represent the swift return of a friend or loved one, and an unbreakable bond. Gifted to travellers to protect them on their journey, they were exchanged as tokens so that lovers or friends might meet again.
